For most of us, stepping out to school and college, heading to market, or commuting to work is second nature. But for millions of Persons with Disabilities (PwDs), physical barriers and a lack of accessible mobility tools often turn simple daily routines into overwhelming hurdles. At Yes! We Can, our core mission is simple yet transformative:independent living for all. We believe that disability is not an inability, but a mismatch between human potential and an inaccessible environment. To bridge this gap, we launched Project Samarthya—a flagship initiative driven by the conviction that empowering mobility unlocks infinite possibilities.
The Vision Behind Project Samarthya
Launched in 2021 in partnership with Bridgestone India, Project Samarthya was created to provide customized, motorized wheelchairs to eligible persons with disabilities. Standard wheelchairs often require physical strain or continuous assistance from a caregiver, inadvertently reinforcing dependency. By introducing smart, safe, and power-assisted wheelchairs, Project Samarthya set out to eliminate these barriers.
Our key objectives were clear from day one:
Deliver Smart Mobility: Provide 100 eligible PwDs with customized motorized wheelchairs tailored to their unique needs.
Bridge Educational & Economic Gaps: Enable individuals to pursue higher education and meaningful careers without transportation acting as a roadblock.
Foster Independence & Dignity: Cultivate self-reliance, boost confidence, and foster active social participation within the wider community.
A Journey of Lasting Impact: How It Works
Transforming lives requires more than just distributing mobility aids—it takes a sustainable, community-first ecosystem. Project Samarthya is built on four comprehensive pillars:
Identification of Beneficiaries (Phase 1, 2022)
Our journey started with grassroots outreach to identify individuals whose daily living, education, or employment prospects were severely limited by mobility constraints. Each beneficiary’s individual requirements were assessed to ensure optimal equipment fit.
Distribution of Equipment
We successfully handed over 100 power-assisted motorized wheelchairs. For each recipient, receiving a wheelchair wasn’t just about receiving a piece of equipment; it was a passport to an independent future.
Mentorship, Training & Long-Term Monitoring
Handing over the keys was just the beginning. To ensure safety and sustainability, we provide at least three years of continuous mentorship and monitoring. Beneficiaries receive hands-on training in operating their wheelchairs safely, navigating public spaces, and performing routine maintenance.
Community Engagement & Peer Support
Mobility is about connection. Through regular socio-cultural events, workshops, and gatherings, we have nurtured a vibrant peer support network where beneficiaries share experiences, build lasting friendships, and find collective strength.
Redefining What’s Possible
The real measure of Project Samarthya’s success is reflected in the milestones achieved by our beneficiaries. Today, young scholars are rolling into university lecture halls on their own. Professionals are navigating workspaces with autonomy and dignity. Individuals who were once confined to the four walls of their homes are now active contributors to their families, workplaces, and neighborhoods. When we remove mobility challenges, dependency fades, and ambition takes over.
Looking Ahead: Building an Inclusive World Together
Accessibility is not a privilege; it is a fundamental human right. Project Samarthya is proof of what happens when purposeful partnerships, innovative technology, and community dedication come together. Through our collaboration with Bridgestone India, Yes! We Can is creating pathways to independence—powered by every supporter who shares our vision. While we celebrate the independence of more than 100 remarkable individuals, our journey toward universal accessibility continues. There are still miles to go and countless lives waiting to be empowered.
