WHEELCHAIR DONATION
CSR INITIATIVE OF BRIDGESTONE INDIA PVT. LTD.
What We Do?
Launched in 2021 in collaboration with Bridgestone India, Project Samarthya is an initiative by Yes! We Can aimed at providing customized, motorized wheelchairs to persons with physical disabilities. The initiative eliminates mobility barriers, empowering recipients to independently pursue higher education, livelihood opportunities, and active community participation. For us at Yes! We Can, mobility is not merely about moving from one place to another—it is the very gateway to human dignity, equality, and self-reliance. When an individual lacks accessible mobility, their aspirations are too often restricted to the perimeter of their living space, compounding social isolation and economic vulnerability. By restoring independent movement, we are removing the everyday friction between personal capability and physical barriers. Accessible mobility ensures that education is within reach, meaningful careers are attainable, and active community participation becomes a daily reality rather than an uphill struggle.
Who is Eligible for a Motorized Wheelchair Under this Program?
Our selection process under Project Samarthya is merit-based, transparent, and structured to create lasting socio-economic change. We prioritize driven, eligible individuals with physical disabilities who demonstrate a strong dedication to pursuing higher education, building sustainable careers, or achieving financial and personal independence. Rather than distributing standard equipment without follow-up, our team conducts a thorough, multi-stage evaluation for every applicant. This includes assessing specific physical mobility requirements to ensure that a power-assisted motorized wheelchair is the optimal, safe mobility solution for their daily transit needs. Currently, we collaborate directly with each candidate to draft and finalize a personalized development plan that sets clear milestones for their academic, vocational, and personal goals. By pairing customized assistive technology with long-term monitoring, routine maintenance training, and community engagement, we ensure that every wheelchair serves as an enduring foundation for active self-reliance and complete social inclusion.
Transforming Mobility: What We Have Delivered So Far
In 2022, the first phase involved identifying individuals meeting the criteria for motorized wheelchairs. Distribution of Equipment: 100 power-assisted wheelchairs were provided to selected beneficiaries. Mentorship and Monitoring: Continuous support and guidance for at least 3 years, including training in wheelchair use and maintenance. Community Engagement: Organizing socio-cultural events to build confidence and create a peer support system for beneficiaries.
Does Support End After the Wheelchair is Delivered?
No. Delivering the wheelchair is only the beginning of our commitment. “Under Project Samarthya, sustained mentorship and ongoing engagement are central to ensuring long-term independence.” Every beneficiary is supported through a dedicated tracking and monitoring program for at least three years to ensure their safety, comfort, and progress. During this period, our team provides comprehensive operational training to help recipients navigate diverse indoor and outdoor environments confidently, alongside essential guidance on battery care, troubleshooting, and routine equipment maintenance. Furthermore, we actively integrate beneficiaries into regular socio-cultural gatherings and exchange platforms, creating a vibrant peer-support network where individuals share experiences, build self-confidence, and support one another in achieving their educational, career, and personal goals.
